Abstract:
Charm played a significant role in the construction of the Standard
Model of particle physics, but fell out of favour as a topic for
theoretical and experimental research when the focus of quark (or
'flavour') studies switched to the exciting possibilities offered by
beauty hadrons. Recent discoveries mean that these priorities must be
reassessed. Most importantly, the first observation of CP violation in
the charm system, made by the LHCb experiment at CERN in 2019, has
opened up a new field of investigation. After a brief introduction to
flavour physics, and charm in particular, I will present the LHCb
measurement, before giving the perspective for future progress.
